The best approach to Clearwell from the South-East is via the old Severn Bridge, M48.

From there it is another 20 minutes drive, taking the Chepstow exit on the Welsh side and following the A466, which bypasses Chepstow and runs along the River Wye, or the B4228 through Chepstow via St Briavels.

The A466 will take you past Tintern Abbey, where the river landscape is particularly beautiful

A short distance further there is an  old signal box and the Railway Cafe, all that remains of the former Wye Valley railway. It's a good place to have an inexpensive, but excellent lunch or afternoon tea. Occasionally they also run miniature steam trains.

After about 10 miles, the A466 crosses the river via a narrow bridge, and the road to Clearwell branches off to the right immediately after the crossing.

After another 4 miles, once you reach Clearwell, drive past the entrance to Clearwell Castle and past the main C of E church, to the central junction with the historic stone cross and turn right into High Street ( left if you arrive from Chepstow). Rosedean Cottage is 100 yards down High Street, past the Butcher's Arms.
